This and That 04-12-14

Let’s Stop Forgiving Those Who Don’t Want Forgiveness – We must not forgive everyone regardless of their response to our offer: Forgiving someone before they repent is un-godlike, avoids dealing with serious issues, and while it might offer some temporary and superficial relief, does not produce long-term satisfaction to the conscience nor reconciliation. – David Murray

Rethinking “The Ministry” – You can have your spot being a busy worker bee in the events of the church without actually doing any kind of ministry. – Will Dudding

Moralism is Not the Gospel (But Many Christians Think it Is) – Add to this the fact that the process of parenting and child rearing tends to inculcate moralism from our earliest years. Very quickly we learn that our parents are concerned with our behavior. Well behaved children are rewarded with parental approval, while misbehavior brings parental sanction. This message is reinforced by other authorities in young lives and pervades the culture at large. – Al Mohler

Reader’s Digest Christianity – The Kingston Trio has a great song called “Desert Pete” about a man crawling through the desert, dying of thirst, who comes upon a decrepit old water pump. Next to the pump he finds a bottle of water. There’s a note, too. The note next to the bottle says that he has to use the water to prime the pump before he can drink any. – Tullian Tchividjian
