This and That 03-30-13

Dear Moms, Jesus Wants You To Chill Out – Moms, Jesus wants you to chill out about being a mom. You don’t have to make homemade bread to be a faithful mom. You don’t have to sew you children’s clothing to be a faithful mom. You don’t have to coupon, buy all organic produce, keep a journal, scrapbook, plant a garden, or make your own babyfood to be a faithful mom. There’s nothing wrong with these things, but they’re also not in your biblical job description. – Stephen Altrogge

You Killed the Author of Life (Preparing for Good Friday) – Good Friday is not the darkness that must necessarily yield to light. It is not the winter sleep that contains and nourishes the seed of life within. It is the day on which human beings — human beings who wanted to be like gods — kill the God who became human, the love that became person; the day on which the Holy One of God, that is, God himself, dies, truly dies — voluntarily and yet because of human guilt — without any seed of life remaining in him in such a way that God’s death might resemble sleep. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Christopher Hitchens Might Be in Heaven – Christopher Hitchens was a blasphemer, true enough, and a nasty character. Aren’t we all, in our different ways. Christ Jesus came for nasty characters like us. And the same blood of Jesus that can deliver us from wrath could do the same for Hitchens had he, if he, at any point, embraced it. It’s not likely, but it’s possible, and, if he did, then Christopher Hitchens’s past atheism would be no barrier to communion with God. It would be, like my sin, crucified with Christ, buried, and remembered no more. – Russell Moore

Open Letter to First Baptist Church of Hammand, IN – I’m not foolish enough to think that I alone could have prevented the downfall of Jack Schaap. But I can’t help but wonder… if I had spoken up about my dad years ago, could the dynamics of FBC have been altered? I certainly don’t have enough power to completely change things in that organization, but you do…if you’d been given the facts. And I wondered, if you had known the truth…  Would you have demanded more accountability from Jack Schaap?  Would you have realized the dysfunction and danger of placing a man so high upon a pedestal?  Would you have spoken up when you saw things you weren’t supposed to see?  Would you have allowed the secrecy and deception? – Linda Murphrey
