The Obvious Bias of Conservatives and Fox News

Like many of you, I was shocked when I read on the Drudge Report that Vice President Biden referred to a Custard shop manager here in Wisconsin as a “Smart A**” after said manager asked about lowering taxes.  The arrogance!  Drudge still has the headline up as the top news story as does FoxNews.com.  Obviously, this is meant to paint the Vice President as a liberal elitist who only wants to raise taxes despite the pleas of working class people like you and me.

Of course, the only problem is, its just not true.  When you get past the front page of these websites and actually read the content of the story, you find a much different picture.  Here the Fox News account:

What do we owe you?” Biden is heard saying in footage captured by WISN-TV.

“Don’t worry, it’s on us,” the manager replied. “Lower our taxes and we’ll call it [the custard] even.”

“Why don’t you say something nice instead of being a smartass all the time,” Biden said a few minutes later.

Later in the same story we read the manager’s take on the ordeal:

The manager said later in an interview with WISN that he thought Biden didn’t seem happy initially about the taxes comment, but that the vice president later whispered that he was just kidding.

Here is the evening news video of this account:

Here is another video account:  http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2010/06/26/biden_calls_manager_who_told_him_to_lower_taxes_a_smartass.html

To is clear that the Vice President was joking around and this was not to be taken seriously.  Yet, this is not the impression on would recieve if you were to just read the headlines on the Drudge Report and Fox News.

Two lessons to be learned from this:

(1)  Never skim through the headlines of a controversial story, get the details and find out what really happened.

(2)  The “conservative media” is just as biased as the so-called “liberal media.”

(3)  Think for yourself, stay informed, but most of all – just think!

  1. Biden has proven that he has a “shoot-from-the-hip”-style mouth. At his age, I only expect his thoughts to come out even more freely. Although I am turned off by his foul mouth and politics, I do appreciate that I don’t have to guess what’s going on in his head. Even if he tried to lie to me, I’m confident that he would tell on himself at some point.

As to media bias, I find that I get a more complete understanding of a situation by taking in the coverage of the event by both sides. However, the “media”, if taken as a whole, is “liberal” since there are so many more large & powerful liberal media producers. From movies and television programs, to Madison Ave ad agencies, to the major networks, to the biggest “family” entertainment producer with the cute little mouse, to… we are flooded with liberal programming. Dominating talk-radio and a couple of news networks that are biased toward the Republican Party don’t provide balance.

As far as Biden just kidding with the manager, do you not think it possible that an attentive aide let him know that he’d better clean up his mess? Knowing Biden, would you let him go anywhere near microphones without such aides? I know I wouldn’t. Whether you’re liberal or conservative, you know that Biden has a history of loose lips speaking foul words. At this point, I believe what he says “live” as he speaks from his heart and then tries to smooth things over when told there is a problem.

If Mr. Biden were a man capable of maturing and growing wiser – learning from past mistakes, he would not even joke around in public about a citizen being “a smartass” for hitting him with a light-hearted (yet very serious) remark. For politicians, “in public” means as soon as you step out of the door of your home and for the Vice President of the United States, well, he’s always “in public”.

His handlers, if they’re worth anything, will have him prepped with a witty comeback the next time he’s hit with “lower our taxes”.
