Political Endorsement – Lauren Stephens for Congress
It’s been awhile since I’ve given a political endorsement on my blog. I’ve actually been trying to stay out of the fray for several reasons. First, I’ve learned in the past that such endorsements can cause a little bit of division especially when you have several good candidates and among them are actual friends of mine who may be disappointed to learn I did not support them. Second, my political leanings are in a bit of transition right now. I think several of my previously held views need a little more thought… Third, I hate the fact that some people value my political opinions so much that they depend on my endorsements in order to vote. Usually when people ask me who to vote for (and people always do) I try to give them the info they need to make a wise, informed choice. But, too often I have people who tell they just want to know who to vote for because they don’t want to do the work themselves. I think this is dangerous. Finally, one of the major reasons I’ve been staying away from public endorsements is because who am I? The opinions of an obscure blogger really don’t carry too much weight in the real world.
Ok, but casting all of that aside, there is at least one public, political endorsement I would like to make before the August 14th Wisconsin Republican primary. If you live in Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional district you ought to consider voting for Lauren Stephens in the Republican primary.
Congressman Tom Petri has been in Congress since 1979. Although he seems to be conservative on several key issues, he is heavily funded by the same unions that actively opposed Governor Scott Walker and has continued to play the Washington insider game of continuing to vote in favor of raising the debt ceiling time and time again allowing the federal government to cast us further and further into debt.
I know it seems dangerous to try and throw out a powerful Republican incumbent in such an important election year, but we have to realize is that sometimes what is best for the country is not what is best for the party. What good is a Republican majority in both houses of Congress if they simply continue on the same old path, just maybe a little slower? If you want to change your government, you have to change your vote. We don’t need officials who keep on doing the same thing but for some odd reason expect different results.
I support Lauren Stephens in her bid to oust Tom Petri because I know her to be a woman who thinks through the issues. If elected, she would not simply tow the party line or be pressured into voting along the lines of special interest group dangling campaign contributions in front of her. I don’t even agree with every stance she takes, but she’s not going to back down just because her view may be unpopular. You have to respect that. She is her own person committed to the principles she believes in.
What are those principles? I can tell you Lauren Stephens in pro-life. Having been adopted herself, this is a personal issue for her, not just a check in the right place on a voter guide. She also stands with our Founding Fathers for individual freedom and liberty. She wants to repeal the TSA and their unconstitutional/invasive search procedures, prevent the federal government from interfering with our local schools, and ensure your right to vote for whomever you wish by opposing term limits (so much for towing the party line). She also is a firm supporter of our Second Amendment.
During the past year or so, it has been my privilege to work with Lauren as her oldest son was a student in my class. I can say from first-hand experience that she is a concerned, involved parent who loves her children very much. She has sacrificed greatly to make sure her children are taken care of. She knows and understands the problems and issues your family is struggling with firsthand. She can represent you because she is you!
So, if you are serious about changing the way Washington does business, it’s time to consider going against the establishment. The Republican establishment is firmly behind their old friend Tom Petri, but the people of the sixth district deserve more than just a party hack bought by unions and special interest groups. No, it’s time to shake things up and send a message loud clear that we are tired of politicians who go along to get along. We need someone who will stand up for the people, for their liberty and for our country. We need to support candidates like my friend Lauren Stephens.
You can learn more about Lauren by visiting her website at www.laurenforcongress.com. Even if you don’t live in her district, tell your friends. No matter where you live, you can still support Lauren with a generous donation (http://laurenforcongress.com/contributions-lauren-stephens/). Believe me, your gift of any amount will help her pass out at least one more flyer, one more yard sign and reach one more voter. As someone who has ran for office I can testify that any amount of money, even as small as $1 can be not only a help, but a real encouragement.
